Fresh Peach Salsa

August offers the best of summer’s bounty! Fresh peaches are abundant, and garden vines are weighted down with plump, juicy tomatoes. Peach salsa is the perfect way to blend these two summer standouts in a sweet and savory treat.

Fresh peach salsa combines the perfect blend of flavors

If you love these two fruits of summer as much as I do, peach salsa is the perfect way to blend them into a delicious hors d’oeuvre or healthy snack. You can make your salsa hot and spicy, and the sweetness of the peaches will complement the savory flavors of the vegetables.

Use fresh-picked produce

I don’t have a garden, but I have a friend who has extra tomatoes in her garden and is kind enough to share. If you don’t have said friend, tomatoes and peppers are plentiful at farm stands this time of year. If you do have an abundance of these veggies in your garden, and you don’t use them up in the salsa, vegetarian chili is another great recipe for garden produce!

I’m lucky to live in an area that is surrounded by orchards, and peaches are popular here. There’s even a big peach festival that brings people from many miles away to buy fresh peaches! Many of the orchardists in our area make weekly trips to take their produce to farm markets that are in urban areas. If you don’t have orchards in your area, I hope you have farm markets as an option for fresh-picked peaches.

Make a variety of salsa options

Peach salsa sounds a bit like an oxymoron to me, because I don’t think of peaches and tomatoes as recipe companions, but the peaches add a sweetness to hot and spicy traditional tomato salsa that brings out all of the flavors.

To please a crowd, you might want to offer a variety of salsa options. I make the recipe, below, without the peaches. It makes a good traditional tomato salsa. Then I divide it in half and add two to three peaches to one half of the recipe. For a third option, add feta crumbles to the tomato salsa.

This blend of sweet and spicy makes the perfect summer snack using summer's bounty!
Prep Time 1 hour

Ingredients

  • 6 Med Tomatoes Diced
  • 5 Med Peaches Peeled and Diced
  • 3 Med Jalapeno Peppers Diced and seeded for medium salsa, leave seeds in for extra hot
  • 1 Large Red Onion Diced
  • 1 Med Red Bell Pepper Diced
  • 2 T Fresh Cilantro Chopped—add more to taste
  • 3 Cloves Garlic Smashed
  • 2 T Lime Juice May add more
  • 1 T Chili Powder Optional
  • Crumbled Feta Cheese Optional

Instructions

  • Dice first five ingredients and combine.
  • Stir in chopped cilantro and garlic.
  • Add lime juice and chili powder to taste.
  • Crumble feta cheese on top if desired.

Notes

For this recipe, it works best to dice the fresh ingredients. Using a food processor adds too much liquid.
